La Tuna Canyon Loop - From the 210 Freeway, exit La Tuna Canyon. Park at the gates of the entrance to the fire roads which is next to the freeway. Starting from the gate ride the asphalt path up until you get to a "Y" in the road. Take the Hotsetter Road asphalt path on your right, up. This is a steep climb which will level off once you reach the dirt fire road. You will enjoy a short and mild downhill ride until you pass the "bees" on your left, then its allup hill from here. Mild at first thenincreasingly steep, then mild again, then steep. (You get the picture). This fire road is approximately 5 miles to the top with a 1200 feet rise in elevation. There are many areas with great views along the way. Once at the top the road "T"s. At the top you will have a view over Glendale, Burbank and Los Angeles. Breath taking. You can continue right on Verdugo Fire road where there are many off trails along the way. At the unsigned trail at mile 7 on the right hand side. Descend the trail, be careful, the trail is narrow and rutty due to the recent rain storms. Descend to the canyon and climb out the canyon to La Tuna Canyon road. If you go right this will bring you down and around to the entrance of the fire road. If you go left at the "T", you will ride the ridge of the mountains overlooking La Crescenta, Montrose and La Canada. I enjoy the ride down, so I choose a "U" turn to return down the trail I came up. Be careful, its a fun ride but does take some focus. Soft sand and rocks can make any rider loose it quickly. Once you reach the asphalt its a fast and smooth ride back to the car, a nice reward after a tough ride.
